Dead Birds Keep Turning Up In A Welsh Town And No One Knows Why

In Llanrwst, people keep finding dead pigeons, but - despite an investigation by Defra - no-one knows what is happening

A load of birds keep dropping dead around a town in Wales, and nobody seems to know why.

This mystery has prompted the launch of an ornithological investigation in Llanrwst, which sits in the Vale of Conwy in North Wales.

It all started after Garry Lloyd Jones started spotting dead pigeons around the town in recent weeks, and shared a post on Facebook asking if anyone knew why they'd started dropping like flies.

Whilst consideration was given to poisoning or avian flu, no-one seems to have a suitable answer, although others around the area have said they've been seeing dead birds knocking about as well.

Now, Jones has reported to strange case to Conwy Council, as well as the Department for the Environment and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Jones, who was formerly the mayor of the town, said: "I found another dead pigeon on top of a bin in town.

"It really is very odd, and let's hope it's not poison or - perhaps even worse - avian flu."

After his initial post, another person said: "I found two dead one by [local shop] Siop Sioned, and the other by the Red Lion pub."

So, it's far from an isolated incident, then?

Yet another person commented that they'd seen dead birds in their garden, whilst another reported two more dead birds that they discovered down by the river.

They said: "I feed the pigeons every day and the birds are in a good condition. There's usually around 80 to 100 of them, but yesterday only around 13 to 14 turned up.

"I've put two of the dead ones in the freezer so that Defra can inspect them.

"It's worrying as I also had to put down two of our chickens. They lost weight and didn't want to eat anything and, when I picked them up, they screamed.

"I've kept chickens all my life but I had no idea what was wrong with them."

According to Defra, there are currently no alerts for wild birds that could have avian flu, so it seems as if the mystery is set to continue for a while just yet.

A spokesperson for the government agency said: "Where dead or sick wild birds are reported to the Defra helpline, we will investigate as necessary as part of our disease surveillance work.

"Results for dead wild birds that have tested positive for avian influenza are routinely published."
