Fiona The Hippo Ditches 'New Year, New Me' Mantra To Pile On The Pounds

Good to see not everyone’s subscribing to that irritating ‘new year, new me’ mantra

Welcome to that wonderful time of year where every man and his sodding dog is telling us to slim down after all that Christmas indulgence. Out with the Terry's Chocolate Oranges and daily benders, in with kale smoothies and yoga. FFS.

Oh, and then you have to splash it all over social media, just to make sure every man and his sodding dog knows that you've been on a 10-mile run before 6am has even rolled around, and you haven't touched a carb in weeks.

Thankfully, though, not everyone's subscribing to that irritating 'new year, new me' mantra.

Introducing Fiona the Hippo.

Well, technically we're re-introducing Fiona the Hippo, as you may remember her from her viral fame last year, after she photobombed a couple's engagement at Cincinatti Zoo and soon became a global icon.

And now she's here to share an important message in body positivity, as she's apparently got no plans to shed those pounds come the new year. HERO.

Cincinnati Zoo tweeted to say that the two-year-old hippopotamus, who weighed just 29 pounds when she was born was born six weeks premature at the beginning of last year, had a 'New Year's ReZOOlution' to simply 'keep growing' - which, at this time of year, is frankly music to our ears.

Fiona's fans were chuffed to hear she'd not only hit her 1,000 pound milestone, but also had firm plans to continue her good work into next year.

One person tweeted: "Congratulations to the staff and to Fiona! I remember praying that she would make it to 50 pounds. So happy!"

Another commented: "I am so happy. I've been on this one ton watch and it's so awesome she's finally there."

A third added: "Well this is a Christmas mood."

The zoo has been documenting Fiona's journey ever since she was born, having announced last summer that she was doing particularly well.

"Fiona's neck rolls are getting bigger!" the zoo tweeted.

"Today the scale read 421lbs for this chunky chunky hippo."

Thanks to Fiona for teaching us what it's all really about: being a happy, healthy weight - whether that's 100 pounds or 1,000.
