A zebra has been filmed eating what appears to be its own faeces, allegedly due to a lack of food for the animals at the zoo in Mexico.

The heartbreaking scenes were reportedly filmed at the San Juan de Aragon zoo in Mexico City, and were shared by the organisation Peludos Al Aire En Sintonia Por Los Que No Tienen Voz (Hairy Ones In The Air In Tune With Those That Don't Have A Voice).

The clip shows a zebra at the zoo, named in reports as Karo, eating what is believed to be its own faeces from the floor.

The organisation has claimed that animals in the zoo are dying from a lack of food, writing on social media: "There is not much time, they are dying of starvation, what part don't you understand? It is important to get rid of incompetent workers and for the animals to be attended."

also claims many of the animals are in bad health conditions.

They said the zebra in the video is suffering from a skin condition, while a wildebeest also died there last week.

The organisation explained that workers at the zoo have also complained about the deaths of another 10 animals.

This was apparently Karo's enclosure:

The zoo's management are yet to comment on the case.

However, Mexico City's incumbent mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, reportedly admitted that the last time the government had invested in the zoo was during the first half of the 2000-2006 administration.

Sheinbaum said there are now specialists working at the zoo, as part of a plan to avoid any animals being abused, and also as a means of checking up on the creatures' living conditions.

She said there will be an investment in the zoo next year, after the local government announced a cut in the funding for zoos earlier this year.

Under the local government's austerity programme, San Juan de Aragon Zoo is said to have suffered several budget cuts this year.
