A man who was attacked by a grizzly bear was rescued after a helicopter spotted his SOS sign.

The Coast Guard pilot acted immediately after seeing the distress signal on top of a shack at a remote mining camp near Nome, Alaska, recently.

The unnamed man, said to be in his 50s or 60s, was also seen desperately waving his hands in the air.

After being rescued, the man, who arrived at the camp on 12 July, explained that he had been stalked by a grizzly bear and hadn't slept for several nights, as he had been trying to ward off any further attacks.

A few days after his arrival, he came across the powerful creature, which dragged him down to a nearby river, inflicting injuries to his leg and chest.

Somehow, he managed to escape and made his way back to his camp where he tended to his injuries.

But his terrifying ordeal wasn't over yet.

Over the coming days, the bear returned, time and time again, reportedly tearing down the door of the cabin.

Fortunately, having had to change their course as a result of bad weather while out on another mission, Lieutenant Commander Jared Carbajal and his crew spotted his distress signal and rescued him on Friday (16 July).

Speaking to The New York Times, Carbajal said: "He said that the bear kept coming back every night and he hadn't slept in a few days."

Co-pilot Lieutenant Junior Grade A.J. Hammac added: "He definitely looked like he had been out there for a while."

According to reports, the desperately fatigued man only had two rounds of ammunition left in his pistol.

Carbajal said: "You could tell he was starting to come off of the adrenaline, I think, and started to realise what happened."

Recently, an incredible video was shared to social media, which allegedly showed what anyone should do if they're ever unfortunate enough to have an encounter with a grizzly bear.

A 12-year-old boy was hiking in Italy with his family when he came across the wild animal and showed us all how to react.

In the terrifying clip, which was filmed last year, the young boy managed to remain incredibly calm as his mum and her boyfriend tell him not to panic.

He nervously walks down the hill as the animal stands metres behind him.

He's told 'Come Ale', by his mum's partner who is believed to be filming the terrifying moment, as per La Voce del Trentino. Following the instructions, the boy walks towards his family, making as little movement as possible.

As the boy turns to check on the bear, it stands on its hind legs and the boy calls for his mum before the animal turns its attention to a nearby bush.
