There has been a public outcry after authorities in Germany have suggested the wild boar that chased a naked sunbather could be killed.

As a result, thousands of people have now signed a petition to protect the animal from harm.

It comes after the local forestry office in the district of Grunewald stated that the animal needs to be 'withdrawn as a matter of priority'.

Authorities have seemed to suggest that the boar could be killed.

Speaking to the RBB, Katja Kammer, the head of the forestry office, said: "This wild sow and her two young is a frequent visitor at Teufelssee.

"They phlegmatically forage in broad daylight over the grass looking for food wherever there are bathers. They have lost all sense of shyness."

The comments quickly ignited a campaign to make sure that no harm comes to the wild boar, with protesters from Action Fair Play organising a demonstration outside the forestry office on Sunday (16 August).

In a statement, Action Fair Play said the animal brought so much happiness to people and that it should be protected at all costs.

The statement read: "A few days ago pictures appeared in the media of a man in the nudist section of Teufelssee chasing a female wild boar which had run off with his laptop in a bag.

"These pictures delighted people around the world. Only the forestry office appeared to get no pleasure from them, deciding instead to shoot the sow and her young."

So far, more than 8,400 people have signed the petition to stop the 'cheeky' boar from being killed.

It reads: "That you are about to die because a lot of likes and clicks about an amusing incident attracted too much attention, although she has more than proven that she poses no potential danger. This must not be! Therefore I ask you to sign this petition! The wild boar from Teufelssee deserves to survive!"

It's hoped that a wildlife sanctuary will take the animal in.

In case you've been living under a rock for the past few weeks, the little swine hit the headlines after it was pictured being chased by a naked sunbather.

According to reports, a family of boar appeared from nowhere and made off with the bloke's laptop.

The pig-pocketing took place on 5 August at the popular bathing spot, to the west of Berlin.

Adele Landauer, an actor and life coach, was on hand to capture arguably the greatest chase scene ever and shared the pictures on Facebook after getting permission off the guy.

Sharing the snaps, she said: "Nature strikes back! Wild boar hunt at Teufelssee!

"In the yellow bag is the man's laptop, so he gave it his all in the Adams costume. I then showed the photos to the man, he laughed soundly and authorised me to make them public."
