A pitbull puppy in the US was rushed to the vet after he ate a bag of crack cocaine that had been thrown into his yard.

The one-year-old dog, Nipsey, was in his backyard in Detroit when the drugs were launched over the fence, just as his next door neighbour's house was being raided by police.

Nipsey found the bag and proceeded to chew it up, ingesting the substance.

While the officers were carrying out a search warrant at the neighbour's house, they heard the barking coming from next door and decided to investigate further.

On entering the back yard they found the chewed up bag and immediately contacted the Michigan Humane Society to ask for advice. The officers ended up taking Nipsey in for treatment.

Nipsey's owner, Clint Majors, said: "When I came outside and saw him eating dope from the house next door it kind of blew my mind.

"Definitely when you've got animals you really care for them."

Nipsey was kept in at the Grosfield Veterinary Center overnight for treatment and monitoring, before being reunited with his owner once he was fully recovered. It's not known how much of the substance he ate.

The Michigan Humane Society (MHS) covered all the costs of Nipsey's treatment, and shared a video about the incident on their YouTube channel, captioned: "The Michigan Humane Society medical team at the Grosfeld Veterinary Center in Detroit rushed to save a dog who accidentally swallowed lethal drugs."

MHS spokesperson Andy Bissonette told CNN: "We dispatched two of our investigators to the home. We then transported Nipsey to our MHS Grosfeld Veterinary Center."

The charity's website said: "He was held overnight to observe any ill effects, but thankfully recovered and was reunited with Majors."

A representative of the charity thanked Majors for 'being a good owner'.

Detroit police spokesman Dan Donakowski said police had not determined who threw the bag of drugs into the yard, as reported by the MHS website. Police did not charge anyone in connection with the incident.
