Two crafty raccoons have been spotted breaking into a bank to steal food.

The furry little guys managed to get into a Chase Bank in Redwood City, California, on Tuesday (20 October) and munched their way through some cookies.

According to ABC 5, a customer thought they saw a stuffed animal sat on a desk, only to realise later after seeing it move that that wasn't the case and the creature was very much real.

Peninsula Humane Society and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals were called to the bank to deal with the situation.

Speaking to a reporter about the bizarre job, the company's communications manager Buffy Martin Tarbox said they hadn't ever been called to a break-in at a bank before.

She said: "Since the bank robbers were masked bandits of the wildlife kind, we were indeed the appropriate responders.

"After about ten minutes of chasing the raccoons around the bank, we were finally able to safely shoo them outside. They apparently didn't want to leave the bank."

She said that after seeing some muddy paw prints on a tree outside, they deduced that the animals were able to get onto the roof and then crawled through the ventilation system.

Ms Tarbox added: "There were several broken ceiling tiles, and the masked bandits knocked papers around and even a computer over.

"Thankfully the raccoons were not injured during their morning escapade, and to our knowledge they didn't abscond with any money."

In much more tragic news, last year it was reported that a raccoon had to be shot after it got drunk at a Christmas market in Germany.

According to German news site Bild, the animal had been drinking leftover mulled wine out of discarded cups at the Erfurt markets, in central Germany.

It was seen at around midday, where the poor creature stumbled across a road and could be seen making its way between stalls.

After playing with a woman's shoes for a bit, it ended up passing out on a door step.

It was eventually captured by authorities, who said it was 'obviously intoxicated'.

A police spokesperson told local news outlet DW: "However, a breathalyser test on the animal was not carried out."

The footage shows the animal getting captured by authorities, who initially attempted to take it to a local animal shelter.

Sadly though, the case was then handed over to the 'city hunter' who put the animal to sleep. According to local news sites, this is because the shelters are only able to accept domestic pets.
