Comedian and animal rights advocate Ricky Gervais has condemned a video of a man smashing a cake into a lion's face.

The video shows a group of men gathered around the lion as one man shoves a cake into its face. The men then break out in hysterics as the lion reels from the blow and paws at its face, clearly in a state of distress.

The video was shared on Twitter by biologist Daniel Schneider, with the caption: "Each and every person in this video needs to have cake thrown in their face, every hour on the hour, for the rest of their lives. Why is it so hard to be kind to animals?"

Gervais responded to the tweet, simply writing: "Dirty, worthless filth."

The footage has now been watched more than 670,000 times, yet it is unclear who the men are, or where and when the video was recorded.

The clip has also been commented on by thousands of other Twittter users - who like Gervais - have poured scorn on the men in the video, with many wishing those responsible were treated similarly.

One person wrote: "The absolute disgusting ignorance, and cruelty of man to take advantage of another being's innocence and vulnerability is the ultimate sign of weakness - these men make be sick. I bet the animals claws were removed as well. If I was there, they'd not be laughing."

Another tweeted: "That's an awful waste of cakes, lets just punch them in the head until their faces collapse, OR how about make them do it to an ADULT lion at feed time."

A third added: "They need to be hunted, trapped, locked and used for show on someone birthday, this would be fair enough."

Last month, biologist Mr Schneider shared another animal cruelty video on Twitter in which an arcade claw grabber game appeared to use live dogs as prizes.

Last month, video emerged of what appear to be live dogs being used as prizes in an arcade machine.

The footage shows the dogs crammed into little buckets as the large metal claw drops down and snatches at them. At the end of the video, a person can be seen collecting one of the dogs and holding it in their hands.

Once again, little is known about when and where the footage was recorded, but it too was widely slammed, with Elisa Allen, director of animal rights group PETA, describing the video as 'a matter of life and death'.
