Sea Eagle Catches And Flies Off With Fully Inflated Puffer Fish

The incredible moment was captured off the coast of Thailand

This is the incredible moment a sea eagle flew away with a fully inflated puffer fish - luckily, it was caught on camera.

As the images show, the sea eagle managed to grab hold of the circular shaped fish, scooping it from the sea and taking to the skies.

Puffer fish inflate when threatened, which usually makes it difficult for predators to take them - and rare for moments like this to be caught on camera.

So fair play to wildlife photographer Sergey Savvi, 40, who told of how the proud eagle circled overhead with its catch for almost a minute, before it flew away out of sight.

The amazing images were captured over the Andaman Sea, just off the coast of Thailand.

Sergey said: "It was a remarkable sight for me - and the first time that I managed to photograph an eagle with prey.

"The fish remained inflated the whole time. It is typical for that species to inflate in dangerous situations, especially such as this one.

"Some species of this fish are poisonous, and carry a neurotoxin in their internal organs that is over 1,000 times more potent than cyanide.

"I just hope that this exotic breakfast wasn't lethal for the eagle."

Eagles are considered apex predators - this means they're at the top of the food chain and aren't natural prey for any larger creatures.

The birds will take virtually anything they can carry - last year it was reported that one flew off with a piglet.

That particular moment was also captured on camera by 75-year-old photographer Clarke Espie in Queensland, Australia after he heard a piglet squealing.

Clarke said he was heading back to a campsite in Cromarty Wetlands when he heard a shriek came from the sky. He instinctively reached for his camera and could hardly believe what he was seeing as the unfortunate pig was carried off.

He said: "I had been invited to capture the unique and diverse birdlife inhabiting these world class wetlands.

"Little did I imagine witnessing two massive sea eagles swooping low over my vehicle, one with a feral pig firmly gripped in its powerful talons.

"Despite its powerful wings, the sea eagle struggled to gain altitude before landing its prey upon a small island within the wetlands, where together the eagles shared the prey.

"I hurriedly snapped these images with a 500mm Telephoto lens as the sea eagles swept past.

"It was one of the most unusual sights I've seen. I thought it must've been a fish at first but as soon as I focused, I could see it was a piglet. It must have weighed around 5kg. Definitely not something I've witnessed before."
