Shocking video footage of a 13ft great white shark breaking into a diving cage - with the diver still inside - has resurfaced (no pun intended). If you weren't already terrified of shark diving, you will be after watching this:

Luckily the man survived - although it looked pretty dicey there for a minute.

The video was shot near Guadalupe Island, a volcanic island located 241 kilometres off the west coast of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula.

It starts off with the great white lunging at the bait held overboard, before thrashing around and smashing through what is meant to be a shark-proof steel cage.

The gigantic creature continues to thrash around before one of the workers opens the cage and it's able to escape through the top and swim to freedom.

You can hear onlookers in the background in disbelief as the shark emerges covered in blood, with one saying: "Is there anybody in there?"

Another simply says: "Oh my god!"

Shock turns into relief when the diver climbs out, tapping his head as a signal to let the others know he's okay.

The clip, which was originally posted in 2016 but has been doing the rounds online, has racked up over 36 million views at the time of writing.

While you might assume this was an aggressive shark attack, YouTube channel Gabe and Garrett explained in the caption:

"These awesome sharks are biting at large chunks of tuna tied to a rope. When a great white shark lunges and bites something, it is temporarily blinded. They also cannot swim backwards.

"So this shark lunged at the bait, accidentally hit the side of the cage, was most likely confused and not able to swim backwards, it thrust forward and broke the metal rail of the cage."

As for the diver, he knew what he was doing.

"He ended up outside the bottom of the cage, looking down on two great white sharks," they continued.

"The diver is a very experienced dive instructor, remained calm, and when the shark thrashed back outside the cage, the diver calmly swam back up and climbed out completely uninjured.

"The boat crew did an outstanding job, lifting the top of the cage, analysing the frenzied situation, and the shark was out after a few long seconds.

"Everyone on the boat returned to the cages the next day, realising this was a very rare event.

"The boat owner, captain, and crew are to be commended for making what could've been a tragic event into a happy ending."

Even so, I don't think I'll be jumping into one of those cages anytime soon.
