A woman who was asked by her cousin to look after her puppy says she refused to give it back.

The 21-year-old had been tasked with watching her cousin's pet pooch, Delilah, after her building manager told her that she wasn't allowed it in her apartment complex.

However, two months after having agreed to take care of the dog, she still hadn't been returned.

Sharing her story on Reddit, the unnamed woman said that her cousin didn't seem like she was prepared to be a dog owner, and didn't have any supplies to hand over to her when she went to pick her up.

Writing in r/AmIthAsshole, she said: "Here we are now, about two months later. I am absolutely best friends with this dog, I love her more than anything.

"My cousin contacts me a few days ago and says she is ready to take Delilah back.

"To make a long story short, they aren't a good crowd, and I didn't think it was a good idea for Delilah to live there.

"I told my cousin that I was sorry but I felt uncomfortable sending Delilah there, and that I have been caring for her and spending all of my own money on her for two months and frankly, I wanted to keep her."

This led to a war of words between the pair, with the woman's cousin angry at her for not returning Delilah when asked.

But she said that she wasn't concerned about getting into any legal trouble and that she felt as though she was doing the right thing.

Adding: "My cousin has a track record of adopting animals and then sending them back to the shelter or just getting rid of them ( I don't know what happens to them).

The woman said she felt 'uneasy' sending the puppy back to her cousin.

"She's been through multiple dogs and cats. This is why I am uneasy."

In a later post, the woman updated her story.

She went on to explain that she and her cousin had managed to talk things over and that she was in the process of formally adopting Delilah.

She said: "I am officially the owner of the dog! To make a long story short, I had a few talks with my cousin regarding all of my concerns and we both decided that the best option was me becoming the official owner of the dog.

"She even admitted to me that it took her so long to get back in contact with me because she wasn't sure about taking the dog back in the first place.

"I offered to pay my cousin for the adoption fee, but she declined and wouldn't take the money because she said that I had done so much already.

Adding: "So yeah, the dog and I are very happy... "
