A woman has been heavily criticised for dyeing her dog different colours.

Nicole Rose, from Ontario, Canada, has defended herself, claiming that her rescue dog, Stella, loves the colours and that they help bring her out of her shell.

Speaking on This Morning last week, the 35-year-old said she adopted Stella back in 2011, when she was just five months old.

And the dog groomer said that she began dyeing her hair a variety of colours not long after taking her in.

She said: "'I think because she gets a lot of attention when she's coloured. The fact she's so shy, it brings her out of her shell.

"When she's not coloured and our clients come in, they almost don't recognise her. I don't know if its the attention or the fact she feels really good, but she just loves her colour."

Nicole revealed that Stella had previously had her fur dyed before she adopted her, and that when she shaved it off, the pooch was distraught.

She added: "I thought it was very cute but we shaved it off,' said Nicole. 'She laid in her bed and moped and was really, really sad.

"We decided to dye her again and she was just so happy and ran around the salon and started dancing and pawing all of us. She was so happy."

Adding: "Once they (strangers) meet her and hear her story, they're quite impressed. Anyone who knows Stella knows how much she loves her hair colour."

But a number of viewers didn't believe her story and thought that it was just cruel.

Commenting on Twitter, one person said: "Stella doesn't look best pleased to me. Leave the poor thing white. That's what she's meant to be. #ThisMorning."

Another put: "OMG! I thought being rainbow coloured was bad but that bright pink has taken my breath away. That's really cruel."

"This is just cruel! Poor dog doesn't look happy at all. Wrong on every level!" blasted a third.

While another peeved viewer said: "I'm sorry but dyeing your dogs hair is cruel and their is nothing you can say to convince me otherwise."

But while most were against Nicole's decision to dye Stella's hair, some were more understanding.

Commenting on the interview one viewer said: "The colours are dog friendly tho and dogs have been done like that for show purposes for years. Some like it others dnt. I wouldn't do it to my rescue poodle but that isn't to say its not OK for her."
