Woman Horrified After Filleted Fish Starts Jumping In The Oven

The footage left many fearing the fish was in need of an exorcist

A woman got the fright of her life after a filleted fish started jumping around in the oven. Watch the bizarre footage below:

In a post now widely shared on Reddit, the hefty piece of fish can be seen cooking in the oven.

Suddenly, the fish starts hopping about, bouncing up and down quite vigorously, smashing against the grill above.

Eventually, it clams itself down and the violent jerks come to an end.

While most were utterly freaked out by the footage, some offered their own explanations as to what was going on.

One person commented: "It's because the fish's spine is still sending electric impulses to the muscle.

"To get rid of them, you need to stick a rod down the fish's spine after you've cut the head."

A second chimed in: "It's probably very fresh and reacting to salt. That's my guess."

A third said: "Yep applying lemon juice or salt to a fresh kill will do this."

To which another user replied: "Or soy sauce. That salt activates the nerves.

"Some Japanese restaurants serve stuff like this. I'd be glad to get it. At least you know it's fresh."

Not quite as helpful, though, another added: "For dessert, we have the severed head of a virgin baboon and your choice of any exorcism."

Discussing a similar video of a dead squid flapping about on a plate, chemistry professor Charles Grisham from the University of Virginia told Discovery News that while it was weird, it wasn't that uncommon.

He explained that while the brain may be dead, the animal's tissue is still alive... kind of.

He said: "Most of the tissue... is actually still alive.

"Cell metabolites are nearly intact, membrane voltages or potentials that exist in nerve cells are probably still close to intact.

"Even though the brain function is missing, the tissues will still respond to stimuli."
