Cristiano Ronaldo has overtaken singer Selena Gomez to become the most followed person on Instagram.

Ronaldo now boasts a mind-boggling 144,338,650 followers, compared to Selena's (almost as unbelievable) 144,321,029, USWeekly reports.

I'm sure, given the fact he's considered one of the greatest players of all time and has won the Champions League five times, along with the Ballon d'Or five times and the Premier League Golden Boot, this new achievement means absolutely fuck all to him, but maybe I'm wrong. Perhaps he's celebrating right now.

Thirty-three-year-old Ronaldo regularly shares photos of himself, his partner Georgina Rodriguez, 23, and his four kids (eight-year-old Cristiano Jr, one-year-old twins Ava and Mateo and 11-month old Alana).

Meanwhile, Selena, 26, announced earlier this year that she would be stepping back from social media and has not posted since September, which may explain why Ronaldo has managed to slip past her.

In a frank post, she wrote: "Update: taking a social media break. Again. As much as I am grateful for the voice that social media gives each of us, I am equally grateful to be able to step back and live my life present to the moment I have been given.

"Kindness and encouragement only for a bit! Just remember - negative comments can hurt anybody's feelings. Obvi."

Speaking in September, she revealed in an Instagram Live that she 'doesn't care' about how many followers she has on the social media site - good job, considering she's just been relegated into second place.

"I don't. I don't care," she said. "I could have none tomorrow. Makes no difference. It's just a number and it's insane so many people are obsessed with a number. It's like, chill out." Good point, Selena.

In an interview with Elle magazine last month, she said: "I'm not on the Internet. I haven't been on the Internet in months. I don't have my password for Instagram."

The third most followed person on the photo-sharing site is Ariana Grande with 132m, followed by Kim Kardashian, who has 120m, and Beyoncé with 112m - but none of them come close to the official Instagram account which is followed by 260m users.
