Former Eggheads star CJ de Mooi has said he fears he may not have long left to live.

Forty-nine-year-old CJ, who was axed from the BBC quiz show in 2016, has previously filed for bankruptcy and is now facing being made homeless amidst more financial difficulties.

Taking to Twitter, CJ said: "I've been living with AIDS for 30 years but the agony of the last three years means I may not have many left.

"I'm outwardly healthy, still running and am staying positive I can get better.

"Thank you all for your love and if I can do anything to help any of you, please just ask. CJ."

A friend of CJ's has set up a GoFundMe page to try and raise some cash so CJ and his husband, Andrew Doran, can pay for a solicitor and won't be kicked out of their home.

A statement on the GoFundMe page reads: "As many of you are aware, CJ needs money desperately. After false accusations were made about him, he lost his job, livelihood and reputation. He has said, done and written nothing wrong, broken no law and committed no offence.

"However, he is bankrupt, extremely ill and in imminent danger of losing his house. He posts daily uplifting videos to inspire others but is now suffering. Let's help him as he always helps others.

"Please note, all money raised goes to CJ's solicitor, not to him directly."

So far, donations have hit £3,962 of the £15,000.

His Twitter account features regular updates from a friend named Joe, who has posted a thank you message to those who have donated.

However, in a more recent post from CJ, he has since urged those who were considering donating to his crowdfunder to send their money to help the victims and the families of those involved in the Sri Lankan attacks instead.

CJ was a regular on Eggheads but was axed following claims of a sexual assault. The charges were later dropped.

He also hit headlines in 2015 after his autobiography was published. In the book, he described attacking a knifeman in Amsterdam while he was a teen.

According to the Daily Mail, the autobiography reads: "He caught me on the wrong day and I just snapped.

"I punched him so hard in the face, knocked the knife out of his hand and threw him in the canal. I fully suspect I killed him. I've no idea what happened to him."

After the book's publication, authorities in the Netherlands said they wanted to speak to CJ for alleged 'murder, manslaughter and assault'. He was arrested at London Heathrow Airport, but the warrant was later torn up in court and Dutch authorities dropped their case to extradite him.
