Actor Reginald E. Cathey, who stared in House of Cards and The Wire, has died, TMZ reports.

The actor is reported to have died at his home in New York, surrounded by friends and family. He was reported to have been battling cancer before his death.

The 59-year-old actor played Freddy, the owner of Frank's favourite BBQ joint, in House of Cards. His role as Freddy saw him win an Emmy for outstanding guest actor in a drama series in 2015.

He also played Norman Wilson for several seasons of hit HBO show The Wire.

In a statement, Netflix said: "We are heartbroken by the passing of our friend and House of Cards colleague Reg E. Cathey.

"Reg was the kindest man, the most giving actor, a true gentlemen. Our sympathy goes to his family."

The Wire creator David Simon also paid tribute to the star, posting on Twitter to say: "Reg Cathey, 1958-2018. Not only a fine, masterful actor -- but simply one of the most delightful human beings with whom I ever shared some long days on set.

"On wit alone, he could double any man over and leave him thinking. Reg, your memory is a great blessing."

Fans have also rushed to pay their respects to the legendary star:
