Actor Verne Troyer has been placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold at hospital, the Mirror reports.

He was taken to the hospital earlier this week after concerned friends alerted the emergency services in a bid for help.

The 49-year-old Austin Powers actor is reportedly being kept under observation, having been rushed to hospital from his home in north Hollywood on Monday evening.

One of his friends apparently told paramedics that Troyer was 'extremely upset, drunk and suicidal'.

A statement posted to Troyer's Instagram page yesterday said: "Asking you to keep Verne in your thoughts and prayers.

"He's getting the best care possible and is resting comfortably.

"Appreciate the support from family, friends, and fans around the world. We will keep you updated here."

Fans wrote messages of support, with one commenting: "Hang in there, Verne! There are millions of us who love and care about you!"

Another said: "Lots of friends praying for you Verne."

One fan wrote: "We hope you get well soon and whatever has been affecting you and bothering you we hope you can find peace. You are funny and a talented man."

They added: "We also know you're a human being so after you are released from the hospital we will understand if you take a break from your YouTube channel."

Another person commented: "Hang in there. Lot's of people care about you. Don't feel alone. Many of us have been in the same situation."

According to the Mirror, the Los Angeles Police Department has said a man matching Verne's description was taken to a hospital and placed on an involuntary psychiatric hold - which isalso known as a '5150'.

LA Fire Department also revealed that the initial emergency call concerned poisoning. However, they did not provide any further details.

The news comes a year after Troyer voluntarily checked into rehab because of a battle with alcohol addiction.

At the time, he released a statement opening up about his struggles with alcohol.
