Angelina Jolie and Bill Gates have been named the most admired people in the world in a new study.

The actor and the tech-giant, who are both now known for their humanitarian work, topped the YouGov lists for the most admired woman and the most admired man in the world.

Gates has topped the list every single year, while Jolie has been the most admired woman for three years - since researchers decided to make two lists, split by gender.

They faced stiff competition from other influential people, including former US president Barack Obama and his wife Michelle - who were each in the second spot on their respective lists.

In third place for women was Oprah Winfrey, followed by the Queen in fourth and Hillary Clinton in fifth, British PM Theresa May was in 15th place.

Over on the men's list actor Jackie Chan came in third, followed by Si Jinping and Jack Ma.

Elsewhere on the lists were Taylor Swift, 9th, Harry Potter star Emma Watson, 6th, Warren Buffet, 12th and Space-X founder Elon Musk, 14th.

Footballer Cristiano Ronaldo was in 10th place, followed by Lionel Messi in 11th and David Beckham in 13th.

Russian president Vladimir Putin was 6th way ahead of US president Donald Trump who was named the 17th most admirable man in the world.

YouGov

Researchers from YouGov asked 37,000 people from 35 countries while compiling their lists.

Looking at responses by each individual country shows a slightly different outcome, with the US naming Obama as the most admired man followed by Donald Trump and Reverend Billy Graham; whereas for US women Michelle Obama was top followed by Oprah and the queen.

Looking at figures from the UK, unsurprisingly, David Attenborough tops the list for men, followed by Obama and Stephen Hawking. The woman UK folk most admire, again unsurprisingly, is the queen, with Michelle Obama in second place and Judi Dench in third.

Every single country placed Obama ahead of Donald Trump, which I'm sure the POTUS will have something to say about when the news gets back to him.
