Johnny Depp has wished his social media followers a merry Christmas, saying 2020 has been 'so hard'.

The 57-year-old posted on his Instagram account, addressing his 9 million followers.

He wrote: "This year has been so hard for so many.

"Here's to a better time ahead.

"Happy Holidays, everyone! My love and respect to you all. Eternally, JD."

Depp posted a photo from the set of his new film, Crock of Gold, which looks at the life of The Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan.

Johnny is actually produced the film, which was directed by Julien Temple, who has worked on short films with the likes of The Sex Pistols, as well as countless music videos and documentaries.

Depp has been fighting his high profile libel case against The Sun for much of the year, which he lost. But at the start of December, it was reported the actor had applied to the Court of Appeal in an attempt to overturn the ruling.

In November, the High Court rejected Depp's claim that The Sun newspaper committed libel when they called him a 'wife-beater' for the alleged abuse - which he denies

But his claims were dismissed with Mr Justice Nicol saying that News Group Newspapers (the parent company of The Sun) proved what was in the article was 'substantially true'.

Mr Nicol also refused Depp permission to appeal in the same month, saying: "I do not consider that the proposed grounds of appeal have a reasonable prospect of success."

The judge found that Depp assaulted Heard on 12 out of the 14 incidences she reported and put her in 'fear for her life' three times, including one that the 34-year-old actor described as a 'three-day hostage situation' in Australia in March 2015.

The Mirror reports that Mr Nicol found Heard was also in fear for her life during incidents on the Eastern and Oriental Express in South East Asia in August 2015 and again in LA in December of the same year.

After losing the libel case, Depp promised he would appeal the decision in a statement which read: "The surreal judgement of the court in the U.K. will not change my fight to tell the truth and I confirm that I plan to appeal.

"My resolve remains strong and I intend to prove that the allegations against me are false. My life and career will not be defined by this moment in time."
