Lil Wayne has offered financial support to the police officer who helped save his life following a suicide attempt.

The rapper, whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr, has recently spoken candidly about trying to take his own life when he was just 12-years-old, and praised cop Robert Hoobler - who he affectionately calls Uncle Bob - for saving his life.

Robert told TMZ that he saw the 38-year-old rapper in 2019 and was told he would hand him over cash should he ever need it, telling the cop 'all he has to do is say the word'.

Robert says he hasn't taken Wayne up on the offer, but he has been talking to the rapper about potentially joining his team in 'some sort of administrative capacity'.

Meanwhile, Wayne has opened up about his mental health struggles and his suicide attempt, in which he shot himself with a gun belonging to his mother.

Speaking on the Uncomfortable Conversations podcast with Emmanuel Acho earlier this month, Wayne said he tried to take his own life after a phone call with his aunt who warned him he wouldn't be able to follow a career in music because he had been ditching his classes.

He went on to explain that his mum had found out he'd been skipping school and was on her way home to punish him.

Wayne said he rang the police then went into his mum's bedroom and retrieved her gun.

He said: "I pulled the trigger. [I shot] in my chest. I aimed for my heart, didn't feel a thing though. So I wasn't going through any pain, it was the shock. I woke up to the police knocking, that's what woke me up. It took too long to die."

Wayne claims police burst through the door, but rather than helping began to search the property for weapons or drugs.

At this point Robert ran up the stairs and started to administer medical attention to Wayne.

He added: "I was spitting all in his face, blood and everything and all I was trying to tell was I'm not a baby. He kept saying, ''Do you not see the f***ing baby on the ground with a hole in his chest?'

"He was screaming at them... and he must've been the boss because they all came in the room and was like, 'Oh sorry boss, we called the ambulance' and he was like, ''I don't give a f**k'."
