Director Kevin Smith, known for his 90s comedies Clerks, Dogma and Chasing Amy, is on the mend following a huge heart attack, suffered after performing in Glendale, California.

"The Doctor who saved my life told me I had 100 percent blockage of my LAD artery (aka 'the Widow-Maker'). If I hadn't canceled [the] show to to go to the hospital, I would've died tonight. But for now, I'm still above ground!"

'The widow maker' is another name for the left coronary artery. An attack such as that Smith suffered is usually preceded by nausea, shortness of breath, pain in the head, jaw, arms or chest and/or numbness in fingers.

Smith had performed an early-evening show with Ralph Garman at the Alex Theatre in Glendale when the 'massive heart attack' occurred. He'd been due to do another performance at 9 but took ill and posted the photo just after midnight, local time.

Fans and fellow stars were quick to offer support for Smith. Jurassic World star Chris Pratt wrote:

"Kevin we don't know each other too good but I have loved you since Clerks and I'm praying my ass off for you cause I believe in the healing power of prayer. Can you please pray with me people?"

Smith rose to prominence with 1994's offbeat supermarket comedy, Clerks, the characters of which were later developed into those in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back.He has also had a successful career in television shows, and is a regular on the comic con circuit.

He owns and operates Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash in Red Bank, New Jersey, which sells merchandise from his films and comics.
