Twitter can be an unfriendly place at the best of times. Sadly, it's become commonplace to see Twitter users hail abuse at celebrities they don't know and have never met, with successful women receiving the vast majority of shameful online trolling.

So when comedian, writer, actor and producer Sarah Silverman received a tweet calling her a c**t, it wouldn't have come as much surprise had she told the user to fuck off, or blocked/muted him.

However, Silverman took a different approach, looking at his tweets and trying to find out the source of the anger behind them.

Searching through the man's earlier tweets, Silverman discovered he was suffering from historic back pain, and also noticed a number of bizarre posts to people asking them to help him get him banned from Twitter.

Revealing abuse he had suffered, the man posted:

To which Silverman replied:

Keen to learn more, Silverman asked the man whether he had problems with addiction. She then asked others who might be able to help him with his back pain to come forward.

Come the end of the day, @Jeremy_Jamrozy was thanking Silverman for her help.

He's now trying to raise money for back-pain relief, though he has noted the difficulty in accessing healthcare.

Silverman has 12.4 million followers on Twitter and uses the site on a regular basis. As a comedian, she is known for her sharp and witty responses to haters.

However, she has often been a target of unacceptable sexist, racist and other online attacks due to her gender, Jewish background and liberal political views.
