Paddy Doherty has sent his fans a message from his hospital bed, telling everyone to take the coronavirus seriously:

In the minute and a half clip, the Celebrity Big Brother and Big Fat Gypsy Wedding star appeared to be breathless and had tubes up his nose.

The 61-year-old said: "Hello everybody, this is me, Paddy. I want to say thank you to every one of you for praying for me. I give thanks and prayers to everyone. I'm a bit on the weak side and all that, but I'm alive."

He went on: "So listen, I want to say to everyone this is far from a joke, it's far from a wise crack. Be careful, keep your distance. I know it's easy saying that."

He told people they should 'think of the other people', adding: "To everyone and anyone, be lucky, be safe and God bless you all. Number one - look after yourself because no one will look after you. Look after yourself, yeah. Take care."

Yesterday, his wife Roseanne Doherty wrote on Facebook: "Please will [everyone] pray for my Paddy he has been taken into hospital. He is not very well."

In another update, she wrote: "Paddy has tested positive for Covid-19 please keep praying for him."

Doherty's son, Simey, also posted a message on Facebook to say his father has double pneumonia.

He said: "Can everybody please keep my father in prayer as I was just speaking to him and he has got double pneumonia. Also claw seen in the lungs and tested positive for Covid. He's also on oxygen. Keep my father in prayer."

In another video, which is six and a half minutes long, Paddy said: "I'm gonna make you all laugh. I've been knocked out for the last couple of days.

"I can sit up now, I couldn't sit up. Look, I can even move my hand, I couldn't do that. This doctor came into me and said, 'Hello Mr Doherty', so I said, 'Doc, will you do me a favour? Will you call me Paddy?' So he says, 'Okay, you can call me Chris'."

A former bare-knuckle boxer, Doherty rose to fame after starred in Channel 4 documentary My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.

He then featured in Celebrity Big Brother in 2011, winning the series, before appearing in two-part programme When Paddy Met Sally, which saw his CBB housemate Sally Bercow move into his chalet on a travellers' site.
