The comedian shared the news on Twitter, describing his cat of more than 16 years as the 'sweetest little soul' he ever knew.
Gervais' partner, author Jane Fallon, also paid tribute to Ollie and said her 'heart is broken in two'.
Since the sad news was shared, 'RIP Ollie' has been trending on Twitter and Gervais has thanked all those who paid tribute to her.
He said: "A heartfelt thank you for all your lovely tributes to @myleftfang. I can't quite bring myself to respond at the moment, but your kindness is very much appreciated."
Ordinarily the death of a celebrity's pet, while sad, may not be so keenly felt by so many. However, animal rights advocate Gervais has made his love for the cat abundantly clear down the years, sharing countless tweets about Ollie with his 14 million followers:
