Chris Martin Says Coldplay Will Stop Making Music In 2025

Chris Martin Says Coldplay Will Stop Making Music In 2025

The end is in sight for the divisive band

It's Christmas Eve Eve, so here's a gift to kick off your day - Chris Martin has said his band Coldplay will stop making music in 2025.

Of course, to many millions of fans, this will come as devastating news. For others, who find their music irritating and ubiquitous, it will come as a blessed relief.

The band's frontman and pianist made the revelation speaking to Jo Whiley for a show to be broadcast on BBC Radio 2 today (Thursday 23 June) from 7pm.

In a clip from the show, the 44-year-old singer-songwriter said: "Well I know I can tell you: our last proper record will come out in 2025 and after that I think we will only tour.

"Maybe we’ll do some collaborative things but the Coldplay catalogue, as it were, finishes then."

Whiley added the caveat that she never knows whether or not he's being serious, though it seems like he was.

Speaking to fellow radio presenter Zoe Ball, she explained: "He’s going to be a DJ for the night. We play Christmas songs, we talk about Christmas past, what it’s like at the moment and the future too.

"He’s always very funny and I'm never quite sure if he’s joking or being deadly serious.

"Towards the end of the time we spent together he shared something pretty honest and pretty intimate which was a huge revelation."

Coldplay formed back in 1996, releasing their ninth album Music of the Spheres earlier this year.

And while they may commonly get flak from music fans, they have been hugely successful. The band are one of the best-selling music artists in the world, filling arenas across the globe and amassing piles of music awards.

Speaking to NME in October, Martin said he knew when the band would stop making new music.

He said: "We’re going to make 12 albums. Because it’s a lot to pour everything into making them. I love it and it’s amazing, but it’s very intense too.

"I feel like because I know that challenge is finite, making this music doesn’t feel difficult, it feels like, 'This is what we’re supposed to be doing.'"

He added: "I don’t think that’s what we’ll do. I know that’s what we’ll do in terms of studio albums."
