Most of the planet is a fragile place right now. It's so fragile that flash mobs can be mistaken for terrorist attacks.

That is exactly what happened when a bunch of German holidaymakers flooded the streets of Costa Brava resort Platka d'Aro armed with selfie sticks and tripods.

They were pretending to chase a celebrity through the town but instead locals mistook the sticks and tripods for guns and things quickly got out of control.

The Mirror reported that hundreds of people began fleeing for cover and upturning tables as they scrambled for the safest places they thought they could find.

One woman even began screaming that she'd seen a man shooting. Meanwhile, cars were swerving away from the crowd and were fearing the worst.

One man, Ignasi Bilis, wrote on Facebook: "At this very moment a man armed with a gun has fired a shot in the main street causing terror among hundreds of people who were on bar terraces and in the shops and who have started running terrified in the opposite direction.

"We are locked in with a group of people at a Mango store. Police cars have just gone by. We don't have any more information at this moment in time."

He was reportedly dining with his wife at the time and also commented that: "We could hear the police and ambulance sirens heading towards the spot where the gunfire had apparently gone off."

Several minutes later, word thankfully got to him that it was all a mix-up.

Catalunya Emergencies even had to tweet to calm people down, saying that no shots had been fired and it was all just a state of panic.

Local councillor Dolors Guirado spoke out on the incident, commenting that it had sparked 'an horrendous panic'. The town hall is now debating whether action should be taken on the group who had accidentally triggered the chaos.
