A father tried to kill his son after claiming he couldn't handle the responsibility of fatherhood.

The horrific details are just coming out, but Nathan Weitzel, 29, drove into several cars at 75mph while his toddler son was left unbuckled in order to kill him.

According to eyewitnesses, as they approached the car after the 'accident' they saw Weitzel elbowing the child in the face.

Isaiah luckily survived the attempt on his life. However, half of his little body has been left in a cast and his mother, Nancy Lopez, says that it will take two months for him to regain his ability to walk.

Weitzel told police that he was under the influence of cocaine.

An investigator said: "The reason he wanted to kill Isaiah was because being a father was a big responsibility and he did not think he was man enough to raise a child." reports the Daily Mail.

He told police: "I was trying to kill my son."

Court records show that the pair went to a park so that Isaiah could play. While they were there, Weitzel thought of a way to kill him. When they left, Weitzel secured his own safety belt but didn't do the same for his son so the chances of him dying would be increased. He then drove around trying to find a good place to crash.

Witness Sam Schulte said: "I pulled the window off, and I pulled the door open, my neighbour got him out of the car and put him on the ground."

Another witness approached the car and saw Weitzel "hitting the child ... it looked like an elbow." They added: "It was horrifying."

The child's mother, Nancy, who is separated from Weitzel, told 9News: "He's a really caring boy. He's really compassionate with other kids.

"I don't understand why or how he [Nathan] could do something like this, but I'm hoping Isaiah recovers soon. People pray for us and for my son to get better."

A crowdfunding attempt has now been set up in order to pay for Isaiah's medical treatment.
