De Niro, Pacino and Scorsese Unite For Epic Netflix Gangster Film

De Niro, Pacino and Scorsese Unite For Epic Netflix Gangster Film

It's called The Irishman and it looks amazing.

All our dreams are coming true! Robert De Niro and Al Pacino are teaming up with Martin Scorsese to star in a movie on Netflix. The dream team is back!

Netflix is spending an insane £100m on the film The Irishman after Paramount Studios said it was too expensive for them. That's pretty pricey, but you know this film is going to be sick.

It's going to have a 2019 release on Netflix - which means we have AGES to wait.

Netflix clearly wants one of its films to get an Oscar and with this squad the streaming service can definitely manage at least one lousy Academy Award.

Netflix released Beasts of No Nation and tried to get it nominated for an Academy Award last year, but the Oscars didn't take the hint. But Amazon made Manchester By The Sea and Casey Affleck won Best Actor last week, so Netflix is champing at the bit. I think they'll easily get some serious credit for this new film. It's been written by Oscar-winning writer, Steven Zaillan, too.

So what's the plot of The Irishman? Well as De Niro and Scorsese are involved, you know it's going to be about the mafia. It's the story of real-life mafia hitman Frank Sheeran who is infamous due to his involvement in the murder of Jimmy Hoffa - who is being played by Al Pacino.

Pacino has been in his fair share of gangster films, but he's never been in a Scorsese film before whereas De Niro has been in eight. So this is A Big Deal.

Frank was a labour union man who used his influence to corrupt and was connected to a mob family.

The Irishman, as he was known, told the story of how he killed Jimmy Hoffman, another union man and gangster, to a lot of people. Apparently Frank also boasted about committing war crimes when he was in the army!

Sounds like a nasty piece of work but an interesting character.

One of the coolest parts of the film is the news that De Niro is going to be 'de-aged' so he looks 30-years-old in part of the film - the same age as when he was in his first Scorsese film Mean Streets in 1973! Coincidence? I think not. It's going to be using the technology that was in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button to make this happen.

De Niro And Pacino Together Again

The first time Al Pacino and Robert De Niro were in a film together was The Godfather Part Two - a truly glorious masterpiece of filmmaking. De Niro played Al Pacino's dad in flashbacks. Some people think the sequel was even better than the original - which hardly every happens! But that's not the only time they've been in the same film - they've also been in Heat and Righteous Kill.
