Netflix have dropped the highly anticipated Ozark season two trailer in a dark and brooding preview of the gritty drama - while leading star Jason Bateman teased an 'escalation' in the upcoming episodes.

The full trailer was released on 29 July and Netflix have confirmed that the show will get back underway on 31 August - slightly later in the year than season one's release date of 21 July 2017.

The show follows the Byrde family - Marty (Bateman) and his wife Wendy (Laura Linney) and their two kids Charlotte (Sofia Hublitz) and Jonah (Skylar Gaertner) - who move to the Missouri Ozark mountains from Chicago after Marty's ill-fated money laundering scheme for a Mexican drug cartel goes badly wrong.

Series one followed the family's attempts to settle into life in the mountains while maintaining their dodgy business dealings, but you can expect things to go up a notch or two in the new series, with Bateman saying at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour: "The writers understand that the audience wants escalation. You don't want redundancies.

"Sometimes that comes in the way of plot complication or emotional intensity."

WARNING: this may contain spoilers you might want to avoid if you plan on watching the show from the start.

In a brief teaser synopsis, Netflix revealed a brief summary of what can be expected in season two:

"In its much-anticipated second season, Ozark continues to follow Marty Bryde and his family as they navigate the murky waters of life within a dangerous drug cartel.

Netflix

"With Del out, the crime syndicate sends their ruthless attorney Helen Pierce to town to shake things up just as The Byrdes are finally settling in.

"Marty and Wendy struggle to balance their family interests amid the escalating dangers presented by their partnerships with the power-hungry Snells, the cartel and their new deputy, Ruth Langmore, whose father Cade has been released from prison.

"The stakes are even higher than before and the Byrdes soon realise they have to go all in before they can get out."

Netflix

The show's first series was well received by critics. CNN's Brian Lowry said: "While the fish-out-of-water concept is one of TV's oldest, Ozark carves out its own path with clever twists - including a late-in-the-run flashback explaining how the cartel came into his life - and the sheer strength of the performances."

Season two of the gripping show is gearing up to be a proper binge-watch job - so try to avoid plans that don't involve being glued to a screen for the start of September everyone.
