It's the day many fans hoped would never happen - Chris Evans has said goodbye to the Marvel Universe.

And there was an outpouring of emotion from the star's army of fans who couldn't believe what they were reading.

One said: "I can't believe you won't be playing Captain America anymore.. It's a sad day.. Just know you will always be cap to me that will never change.. So long partner.."

Come one, guys, he's not even the best superhero in the Avengers.

But it wasn't just fans who were getting upset about the news, Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds announced to the world that he had been brought to actual tears.

He responded to the tweet: "I'm not crying. I'm weeping. There's a difference."

It has not been confirmed whether this is the final time Evans will play the patriotic super soldier, or he is just taking a break from the role.

He first donned the blue tights and wielded the famous Vibranium steel shield in 2011's Captain Amverica: The First Avenger, and since then he has been one of the stalwart member of of the multi-million dollar Marvel Cinematic Universe, alongside Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark.

According to reports in Comicbook there are rumours that the upcoming film could see Captain America die and the mantel could be passed to another character, such as Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes, who in the comics takes over after Captain America is killed.

Despite CA being one of the less impressive heroes, news of Evans' departure has certainly struck a chord with fans around the world.

The fourth instalment of the Avengers series is as yet untitled but is due for release in May 2019.

Looks like it's gonna be an emotional one.
