Tom Holland and Kevin Feige have confirmed the news many Marvel fans have been expecting following the breakdown of negotiations between Sony and Disney.

Spider-Man will not be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and will be swinging far away from the MCU characters we've seen him bond with over the course of five movies.

This new development means Spidey won't be appearing in any future MCU movies. It also means MCU characters will not be making appearances in any solo Spider-Man outings.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly at Disney's D23 expo, Holland, 23, appeared characteristically cheerful about what the future has in store for Peter Parker.

He said: "Basically, we've made five great movies, It's been five amazing years. I've had the time of my life. Who knows what the future holds? But all I know is that I'm going to continue playing Spider-Man and having the time of my life.

"It's going to be so fun, however we choose to do it. The future for Spider-Man will be different, but it will be equally as awesome and amazing, and we'll find new ways to make it even cooler."

Feige - who served as a producer on Holland's two solo Spider-Man movies - also spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the shock news, expressing his 'gratitude and joy' about his time working on Spider-Man.

He said: "I'm feeling about Spider-Man gratitude and joy.

"We got to make five films within the MCU with Spider-Man: two standalone films and three with the Avengers.

"It was a dream that I never thought would happen. It was never meant to last forever. We knew there was a finite amount of time that we'd be able to do this, and we told the story we wanted to tell, and I'll always be thankful for that."

While at the D23 expo, Holland also took the time to express gratitude and love towards his fans, as the beloved franchise takes a new - and potentially interesting - direction.

While promoting his upcoming Pixar film Onward during the Disney Pictures panel, Holland told the audience: "Listen, it's been a crazy week, but I want you to know, I am grateful from the bottom of my heart, and I love you 3000."

Earlier this week, Spider-Man: Far From Home raced ahead of Skyfall to become Sony's biggest ever movie at the global box office, raking in over one billion dollars.
