When you head to the pub for a nice meal (those were the days), you're usually met with a load of options.

Whether it's an upmarket pub or one that's a dive but still beloved, there are a few staples that will appear on nearly every menu.

We've set out to see what Australians consider the best.

After hundreds of votes in a culinary tournament, you, the people, have decided that the humble chicken parmigiana is the best.

It was a hard fought victory for the meal. It came up against some worthy foes like fish and chips, nachos, and a chicken burger.

We had 16 meals that you'd typically have at the pub, which ranged in sizes from a bit peckish like a bag of Salt and Vinegar chips or ribs, to the large and in charge hearty orders like a beef burger and steak.

The four meals to make it to the semi-final were the parmi (for NSW people and parma for people in Victoria), the steak, the beef burger and fish and chips.

The parmi and fish and chips were declared the most popular two meals after a barrage of dozens of votes.

However, there can only be one winner.

The chicken parmigiana has been a favourite for years and this win only cements its place in Australians' hearts.

The breaded chicken breast, topped with parma ham or eggplant, a tomato sauce and melted cheese is simply delicious. Usually served with fat chips and a stock standard salad with dressing; it's one of those things that just screams Australia.

Despite the meal originating in the US thanks to Italian immigrants, it quickly made its way to Australia in the 1950s and became popular.

However, it took around three decades for it to become a staple at the pub.

Food historian and author Jan O'Connell told the ABC: "That was as a restaurant dish rather than in the pub.

"I'm guessing it started to become a pub meal in the 1980s. [But] you won't find chicken parmigiana in any Italian cook book."

There will be loads of people who will be unhappy with this result, with some saying the fish and chips is better or maybe the beef burger deserved the crown because it can be more versatile.

However, haters will just have to cop it and accept that the chicken parmi is the reigning champion.
