Customers Confused By 'Expired' McDonald's Monopoly Prizes

McDonald's Monopoly is back, but some confused customers have noticed that their winning tickets look to have already expired despite the game being rolled out across Maccies restaurants just days ago.

For the uninitiated, McDonald's Monopoly gives customers the chances to win anything from a free small fries way up to huge cash prizes, by buying meals and peeling off the Monopoly stickers on certain products.

Customers collect these game pieces, such as colour co-ordinated road names or train stations as seen on the Monopoly board.

When you collect a set, you get a prize, while the 'instant wins' allow you to win prizes right there at the restaurant.

The difference this year is that customers are noticing that the expiry dates on the prizes have expired up to three months ago.

People voiced their frustration online last night, after they peeled back stickers to find the codes expired in May.

James Bourne said: "So when putting the codes in McDonalds are we also meant to buy a time machine?"

Another said: "Bought a Maccies today but the VIP stickers expired months ago what's that about."

Hannah Law said: "Am I being dumb or has McDonald's legit just played me... ordered breakfast this morning and the monopoly just started today. I'm thinking cool free stuff I look at the expiry date on the stickers 2 are already out of date and one goes out on Monday!"

Another fan tweeted: "How can my McDonald's monopoly sticker be expired May 2021 when it only just started back today."

Maccies fans can relax, though, because the company has already stated that they ignore these dates. The tickets were printed before the Monopoly competition had to be rescheduled due to the pandemic and so the shown dates are not the correct ones.

Tickets showing 'play until' dates of May 4 2021 will be valid until October 4 2021.

Non-food prizes show as needing to be collected by June 4 2021 can be collected until November 4 2021, while food prizes with a date of May 18 2021 can be collected until October 19 2021.

Instant win non-food prize or discount prizes can be collected by November 5, 2021 instead of June 4, 2021; instant win food or Just Eat vouchers, meanwhile can be collected until October 19 2021 instead of the shown date of May 18, 2021.

Instant win discount voucher (excluding Just Eat) prizes can be collected until January 31 2022, while in the online game, prizes can be collected until October 15 2021.

A McDonald's spokeswoman told the The Sun: "Packaging and Game Pieces printed prior to rescheduling couldn't be securely reprinted in time, so new dates apply - consumers must see mcdonalds.co.uk/monopoly/news or ask in restaurants to find details of all rescheduled enter-from/until dates and claim or redeem prizes-by dates."
