Leaked Photo Shows Greggs Is Releasing A Vegan Steak Bake

It looks like Greggs are about to release a new vegan steak bake, if a leaked picture shared on Facebook is to be believed.

If you remember the clamour and excitement that the vegan sausage roll caused when it was released, this could be even bigger if it turns out to be correct.

So, whilst this seems a bit flimsy, there's a good chance that it's actually true. The picture - which shows the vegan steak bake being advertised on a shop label - describes the vegan steak bake as containing "savoury flavour Quorn mycoprotein pieces and diced onions in gravy, wrapped in crisp puff pastry".

Mmm...mycoprotein pieces...

As well as the recipe and contents, we can also see that it will set you back £1.55 for the pleasure, and will contain 380 calories.

It was spotted by eagle-eyed Greggs customer Rosie Anne Barnett, who then posted the picture online where it has been shared to a UK Vegan Facebook page, amongst other places.

She wrote: "Apparently launches tomorrow".

Now, that might be a bit out, given that the company tends to release new products on Thursdays. That would mean that we will get the first look - and taste - of the new vegan-friendly treat on Thursday 2 January.

Vegan Food UK, which boasts 94,000 followers on Instagram, shared the photograph of the label and wrote: "CONFIRMED! The first official evidence that @greggs_official will launch a Vegan Steak Bake!

"And many guessed correct that it will be Quorn making the 'steak' part of it.

"It should launch today."

Again, the timing might be wrong, but something is on the horizon.

The Yorkshire Post managed to get hold of a spokesperson for Greggs, who told them: "All I can say at this stage is we're launching a vegan product."

This sort of announcement has been teased for a while, actually. In August, Greggs' chief executive teased the prospect of a new addition to the vegan menu on the radio back in August.

They have also since then confirmed that whatever it was they were releasing would hit shelves in January.

That's what we've got to go on, so far.

It makes perfect business sense too. Greggs - which has around 2,000 shops across the UK - saw a sharp increase in sales last year, in no small part thanks to the release of the vegan sausage roll.

Well, whether it is next week, tomorrow, or the next day, let's hope it is as big a success as the vegan sausage roll.
