Which sauce someone chooses to put on their sausage sandwich tells you a lot about a person. But while most stick with the traditional red or brown sauces, Louise Minchin shocked viewers when she revealed what she likes to lather her bread in:

Yep, that sweet, orange stuff that's usually saved for your toast.

The BBC Breakfast presenter confessed to her interesting choice of condiment after she and Dan Walker discussed the shortage of tomato ketchup sachets in the US.

Dan asked: "Sausage sandwich - red sauce or brown sauce?"

To which Louise said: "Neither - marmalade. That's really messed with your head hasn't it?"

"What? You're a maverick," replied a pretty stunned Dan. "My grandad used to have marmalade with bacon but what? Just normal marmalade? You're breaking culinary boundaries."

Fellow presenter Carol Kirkwood was also fairly perturbed by Louise's revelation, saying: "I prefer mustard".

Dan then ended the to and fro by asking: "What's wrong with bog standard ketchup?"

I mean, I don't really see the issue myself. I think it sounds pretty tasty, however, Louise's comments sparked a fierce debate on social media, with viewers split.

Some claimed that she just needs to have a word with herself.

One critic said: "Nooo! Can't do sweet and savoury - I can't even, as a proud Yorkshire woman, do Christmas/fruit cake with cheese *hangs head in shame."

Echoing these sentiments, another chimed in: "A simple brown sauce butty, no marg. bbc breakfast."

Others, though, felt she was on to something and said they had either tried it or were definitely going to.

"Worth a try, not much different from turkey and cranberry sauce or pork and apple sauce?" asked one.

Another said: "It's delicious! She's not wrong."

While a third added: "Sausage and marmalade was the breakfast of choice at the school I went to."

Well, we decided to check in with our followers to see what they thought of it all.

And this is the result: Tomato Ketchup took top spot, with 57.6 percent of the vote, while Brown Sauce came a distant second with only 36.7 percent.

Marmalade, however, received just 1.7 percent. Louise is crying, thanks.

Many were utterly appalled by Louise's choice of topping, with a number of readers claiming it was simply wrong.

Commenting on the poll, one person said: "Ketchup, or a nice mustard, depends on the time of day for me."

While another added: "It's quite simple, Tomato for Sausages, Brown for Bacon and Marmite for Toast, anything else, you need help!"
