Mars Is Launching Vegan Galaxy Bars For The First Time

The new bars come in three flavours

There's been an early Christmas present for vegans as Mars has announced it will be launching its first dairy-free Galaxy chocolate bar.

Three new bars come in three flavours - smooth orange, caramel and sea salt, and caramelised hazelnut - and are certified by the Vegan Society.

Up until now it's been a bit more difficult to find plant-based 'milk' chocolate without going to a specialist shop, so the fact Mars is getting in on the action is sure to be a popular move with vegans and those who are lactose intolerant.

Mars says it has spent six months knocking together its vegan bars, replacing the cow's milk with hazelnut paste and rice syrup.

Three new vegan Galaxy bars will be available to buy from Monday.

Linda Lopez, the head of the sensory team at Mars, told the Guardian: "The taste of Galaxy has not changed in the nearly 60 years since it was launched. We wanted to retain the classic smooth and creamy taste and texture without any compromise."

The packaging has also had an eco-makeover, too, with Mars announcing it will be its first chocolate bar wrapped in compostable film packaging, made of wood fibre, and covered with a cardboard sleeve.

And it's even better news for anyone craving the taste for Galaxy since going vegan, because the bars will be on sale from next Monday 18 November at Tesco, Ocado and Amazon from Monday - but you will be expected to part with a bit more cash, double the price of your standard Galaxy bar in fact, with 100g bar costing £3.

Mars are among the first to sell vegan 'milk' chocolate bars.

Abigail Stevens, the trademark marketing manager at the Vegan Society, added: "We're proud to register Galaxy's first ever non-dairy milk chocolate bars with our vegan trademark. The brand has demonstrated that dairy is not necessary to make great tasting chocolate, and that people can still enjoy their favourites without the use of animals."

Vegans have reacted with delight to the news, with one posting on Twitter: "Yes! Mars is launching a vegan Galaxy bar in the UK on Monday. It's high time we took the animal cruelty out of our favourite treats."

And another said: "Oh boy. Three new vegan Galaxy bars are being launched!"

A third added: "IDK about you but I'm gonna eat those vegan galaxy bars until I throw up."

That's commitment for you.
