The debate about whether pineapple belongs on pizza is one that will likely go on for all of human existence. Some people think it's bloody delicious and others think it has no place, whatsoever, on a crusty slice of pizza.

But it seems like there is a new topping in Australia that causes more revulsion than the humble pineapple.

Menulog has been keeping track of every single pizza ordered in 2019 and made note of all the requests people made about particular toppings.

Interestingly, olives were ranked the number one food item to be taken off a pizza.

A whopping 3.6 million pizzas were made through the food delivery app last year and the company noted that after olives was pineapple and then onions came in third.

While loads of people hate the idea of pineapple on pizza and the fact that it's the second most popular food item to remove from a pizza, it actually registered as the number one ingredient to put on a pizza.

Baffling stuff this.

According to news.com.au, South Australians were the reason behind this interesting statistic.

Pineapple beat out the likes of mushrooms and anchovies for that category, meaning it's equally adored and reviled in Australia.

The most ordered pizza in the country is the simple Margherita, with 13.4 per cent of orders being the easy tomato base sauce and cheese option, followed very closely behind was Meatlovers with 13.3 per cent and then Hawaiian at 12 per cent.

But when you break it down state to state, things get a bit more interesting.

Supreme was the most popular in New South Wales, the ACT and Queensland, with between 16 and 17 per cent of the orders, Margherita topped the list in Victoria with 16 per cent, while Meatlovers is adored in Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

South Australia seems to really love pineapple, with Hawaiian clinching the number one spot, and then Tasmania has chosen Pepperoni as the best.
