Many of us have been caught out while eating out abroad, having had to take a bit of a gamble when ordering after realising our language skills aren't quite as advanced as we'd hoped.

We instead point at the menu desperately and hoping for the best - vowing to pick up a few more phrases next time we travel.

Sometimes, of course, that risk pays off, but other times the meal that arrives takes us by surprise slightly - which appears to be what happened to someone in Rome recently.

A Reddit user posted a photo of a pizza their brother was served while in Rome, which other users said looked like a huge 'f**k you' to tourists.

The pizza in question had a sauceless thin base and came topped with fries, slices of hotdog and what looks like ketchup and mayonnaise drizzled across the top.

Redditor u/saltybz wrote: "My brother got this pizza in Rome, Italy..."

When someone in the comments joked that the pizza looked like a 'Pisa s**t', someone else replied: "Exactly my thought. That is a major 'f**k you American'."

Another agreed: "In fact it is! Many restaurants, especially in Sicily, refer to a pizza with hot dogs and french fries as pizza americano. But those had cheese at least. This pizza looks like the chef is telling whoever ordered it to 'get f****d'."

A fourth said: "Same happened to a family member of mine. I think it's either language barrier or a 'f**k tourists' thing."

Someone else joked that it was 'seasoned with chef's tears', while another Reddit user added: "And anger."

Others said the dish was actually a popular pizza dish in Italy - either called 'Pizza Paperino' or 'Pizza Americano' - but that it was more commonly seen as a kids' meal.

One explained: "That's a version of Pizza Paperino (Donald Duck). As you can guess from the name, is mostly ordered by kids. If you google it, you will find tons of pictures of questionable pizzas with fries and wurstel.

In my experience it has nothing to do with tourists or Americans, it's just a pizza with two cheap ingredients liked by kids. Source: born and raised in Rome, used to work in a pizzeria."

Another added: "It's more or less a kids' dish. And a lot of kids like it without sauce (that's a last my experience with picky eaters)."
