Last January Greggs gave us the Vegan Sausage Roll, which became about as iconic as its meaty counterpart seemingly overnight - largely thanks to the fact that it prompted Piers Morgan to go into full meltdown mode.

Well, less than one year later the chain is doing it again, with the launch of a plant-based version of another classic: the Vegan Steak Bake.

And it's already created such a buzz, that people were queuing up to get their hands on one at a launch event last night.

Greggs launched the new pastry with a VIP event in Newcastle Grainger Street, opening the doors at 10pm to a long queue of excited punters.

Greggs fan Danni Deloncho was among those in the queue, telling ChronicleLive: "I just love Greggs and love to try anything new they do. I'm really excited."

And the initial reviews seem promising. One customer called Katie gave a perfect 10 for her Vegan Steak Bake, saying it tasted 'very flavoursome'.

Many others have said they 'woke up early' this morning to get themselves down to Greggs to try out the new product.

Roger Whiteside, chief executive at Greggs, said: "Our Vegan Sausage Roll launch was a huge success and we've been working tirelessly to expand our vegan friendly offering and provide more delicious savoury food on-the-go options for people looking to reduce their meat intake.

"The launch of our Vegan Steak Bake is another key milestone on our journey to become our customers' favourite for food-on-the-go. We look forward to hearing the feedback."

The Greggs Vegan Steak Bake (from £1.55) will be available initially across 1,300 shops from 2 January, before it's rolled out rolling out to a further 700 shops on 16 January.

If you want to double check whether or not your local Greggs has them before you venture out, you can find out more with the Vegan Steak Bake Locator, which goes live at 10am on 2 January.
