A restaurant's 'posh' take on a local dish has divided social media users, with some proving to be so outraged by the £17.95 parmo that they've dubbed it an 'absolute monstrosity'.

For anyone unfamiliar with a parmo, it's a popular delicacy from Middlesbrough that sees a flattened, breaded cutlet of chicken (or sometimes pork) topped with a white bechamel sauce and cheese and grilled.

The beautifully beige Teesside treat has become something of a local legend, celebrated as much for its deliciousness as it is for its affordability.

But one restaurant in Harrogate has decided to add a playful spin on the parmo to its menu, having unveiled 'Harrogate's Poshest Parmo' - along with a £17.95 price tag.

Burgers and More has topped its chicken parmo with 24 carat gold and caviar for an upmarket twist on the classic dish, and it comes with a separate jug of hot cheese sauce and garlic mayo for extra flavour.

"Harrogate's Poshest Parmo," the restaurant wrote on Facebook.

"Posh Parmo topped with 24 carat gold and Caviar £17.95.

"We have limited numbers and is only available in the restaurant."

The eatery added: "We could also add truffles, what do you think?"

Some social media users commented to say they'd be up for giving it a go, with one writing: "Well then, looks like we are going to be coming to Harrogate very soon!"

Food blogger Dad Loves Food also popped down to try one out, saying in a Facebook Live video: "That's bang on, that!"

Admiting he had been dreading the caviar, he said the fact the chicken breast had been cooked in garlic mayo gave it a good 'garlic kick'.

However, not everyone was particularly enamoured by the glow-up.

A very unimpressed person wrote: "What an absolute monstrosity. How about the numbers are limited to the bin?"

Another added: "That is just wrong on so many levels!"

While a Teessider said it looked 'absolutely horrendous' and gave the parmo a score of '0/10', another person added: "This is what happens when The Parmo Purists' backs are turned. One day it's kebab meat and then it's this horror. They should be sued."

People are very protective about the humble parmo, evidently - although one Facebooker decided to swerve all the drama altogether, and simply joked: "24 carrots? Parmos aren't supposed to be healthy."

Burgers and More said in a statement to LADbible: "We've always taken pride in being a bit different, from fries with custard to alcoholic Knickerbocker Glories!

"As an independent restaurant we are always looking to catch the eye of people and create dishes that not only draw attention but are really tasty as well!

"Harrogate has a bit of a reputation for being posh so we thought we'd try and upset a few northerners with our own posh version of their classic. So here it is! Locally sourced chicken breast with panko breadcrumbs, rich cheese sauce, 24 carat gold leaf and caviar!

"Don't knock it until you've tried it!"
