Sainsbury's Is Selling Pigs In Blanket Sushi This Christmas

Sainsbury's will be selling sushi with a twist as part of its Christmas range for this year... having managed to incorporate pigs in blankets into the Japanese favourite - a mash-up so bizarre that people are even questioning if it's a 'wind-up'.

While sushi dishes can vary, traditionally they don't tend to involve British staples like bacon or sausage. That is until now, the year where quite literally nothing surprises us anymore.

According to The Grocer, the 'Sainsbury's Pigs in Snowy Blankets' will be available in stores from 1 November, and will set shoppers back £3.

The consumer outlet reports that the bacon-wrapped sausages are combined with cranberry sauce and nori seaweed, before being wrapped in 'sticky, snowy' sushi rice blankets and topped with more cranberry sauce and crispy onions.

Consumer journalist Harry Wallop recently posted a photo of the product, tweeting: "After the 2metre long pig in blanket, the pigs in blanket pizza & pigs in blanket mayo, I bring you news that @sainsburys has officially jumped the shark. Or the pig. SAINSBURY'S IS SELLING PIGS IN BLANKET SUSHI."

Needless to say, responses from other users ranged from sheer bewilderment to actual disgust.

Some replied with being-sick emojis, while one said the idea was simply 'horrifying'.

Someone else wrote: "That's disgusting."

Another asked: "Are you sure sounds like a wind up."

A third seemed a bit more open to the concept, writing: "Hmm, if as shown, it's sausage in rice, then that's not a bad idea. If it's sausage in prawns and salmon, then blugh!"

The Grocer says that Sainsbury's has more than 300 new festive food and drink products this year, with other items on sale including party food like Lemongrass Prawn Skewers, Chicken Waffles and Mini Hot Dogs with Apple Drizzle and Crackling.

There are also newcomers to the 'On the Go' range, such as Grinch Snacks Brussels Sprout and Parsnip Snacking Bhajis and Rudolph's Night Before Christmas Feast Sandwich, while those after a meat-free fix can feast on vegan products like the Plant Pioneers No Chicken Kievs, the Plant Pioneers No Turkey Crown and Mini Black Bean Tacos.
