It's been a solid start to the new year for vegans, people doing Veganuary or those just trying to cut down their meat consumption, with just about every fast-food chain announcing new plant-based launches.

The latest in the list is Subway, which has revealed its Meatless Meatball Marinara - a vegan-friendly take on the classic sub.

Subway reckons this version is just as tasty as the original. It features meat-free 'meatballs' made from a mix of soya and wheat proteins, combined with a range of tasty herbs and spices, smothered in the same marinara sauce as the meat version and topped with vegan melted cheese. Sounds good to me.

The sandwich chain has offered vegan options for a while now, including the standard Vegan Sub and Vegan Salad. There's also a handful of vegan-friendly sauces including Sweet Onion and Sriracha Hot Chili.

Subway

Colin Hughes, country director Subway UK and Ireland, said: "We're always shaking up our menu at Subway as we are constantly innovating. Our guests wanted a meatless version of our iconic Sub, so we made it for them.

"The Meatless Meatball Marinara is equally as delicious as the original, and a tempting choice for all our guests, whether they are looking for a plant-based alternative, or simply want to enjoy something a little different."

Toni Vernelli, from Veganuary, said: "Veganuary is creating a new wave of consumers with strong ethics and a big appetite. This is a real opportunity for businesses to improve and expand their plant-based offerings for the growing meat-free audience.

"We're delighted that Subway has risen to this challenge - helping people who are avoiding meat to still enjoy the food they love - we can't wait to try their new Meatless Meatball Marinara." Me neither, mate.

You can pick up a Meatless Meatball Marinara from Subway stores nationwide right now.

Subway is just one of a number of eateries that has boosted the number of plant-based options on their menus; with McDonald's and KFC both revealing their first ever vegan meals and Greggs following on the huge success of the vegan sausage role by adding a Vegan Steak Bake.

Crowds of hungry pasty fans queued up outside Greggs in Newcastle Grainger Street to be the first in the country to try out the new treat.

Greggs

Roger Whiteside, chief executive at Greggs, said: "Our Vegan Sausage Roll launch was a huge success and we've been working tirelessly to expand our vegan friendly offering and provide more delicious savoury food on-the-go options for people looking to reduce their meat intake.

"The launch of our Vegan Steak Bake is another key milestone on our journey to become our customers' favourite for food-on-the-go. We look forward to hearing the feedback."
