With Veganuary in full force, it's easy to understand why all the restaurants are jumping on the proverbial veggie wagon. Greggs is on it with sausage rolls and steak bakes, Subway has launched a meatless Meatball Marinara and McDonald's has launched its first ever vegan meal.

The latest place to follow the hype is TGI Fridays - the American chain diner has unveiled a new vegan watermelon steak. No, your eyes aren't deceiving you.

The meat-less treat will set you back £12.99 ($17), according to The Mirror, which is more than half the price of a 16-ounce sirloin beef steak (rightfully so).

This means that animal lovers and those watching the waistline can enjoy 'fresh watermelon carefully cut into steak slices then chargrilled to create its unique steak-like texture'.

TGI Fridays tweeted that the (watermelon) steak will be marinated in garlic and chilli, chargrilled and served with crispy fries, roasted vegetables and our Legendary Glaze.

Terry McDowell, head development chef at TGI Fridays, told The Mirror: "We're really excited about the new vegan steak because it's unique to us here at TGI Fridays.

"We have taken a watermelon and made it into a main course. Most people think of watermelon as a sweet dish, but we have flipped that on its head. It is full of flavour and perfect for Veganuary and those who want to try something different."

TGIs launched the watermelon steak on 6 January.

If the thought of a watermelon steak doesn't tickle your fancy, maybe the Greggs vegan steak bake will?

Following on from the vegan sausage roll (which went down a treat among customers), the bakery chain has launched this new plant-based pastry.

Roger Whiteside, chief executive at Greggs, said: "Our Vegan Sausage Roll launch was a huge success and we've been working tirelessly to expand our vegan friendly offering and provide more delicious savoury food on-the-go options for people looking to reduce their meat intake.

"The launch of our Vegan Steak Bake is another key milestone on our journey to become our customers' favourite for food-on-the-go. We look forward to hearing the feedback."

The Greggs Vegan Steak Bake (from £1.55) will be available initially across 1,300 shops from 2 January, before it's rolled out rolling out to a further 700 shops on 16 January.
