TikToker Shares Divisive Technique To Cook Healthier Minced Beef

“That must be the blandest, driest beef in all of the world. Like weird sawdust crumbles.”

A TikTok user has gone viral after sharing what she says is a healthier way to cook minced beef - a hack that has divided other social media users.

TikToker Emily Harper (@eemilydharperr) shared a video of her 'kitchen tip' in action, saying: "Let me show you what I learned in Nutrition a couple years ago."

In the clip, she puts ground beef into a frying pan and breaks it up with a spatula and leaving it to cook.

"All this grease is disgusting," Harper says as the beef browns, moving it around in the pain to show the fatty liquid surrounding the meat.

"So get rid of it!"

Harper then pours the mince into a sieve in the sink, before running it under the tap to rinse it.

Shaking off the excess water, she then pours the beef mince back into the original pan, saying: "Look at the difference!"

Moving the meat around the pan again with her spatula, there's now no extra liquid.

Many people commented on social media to say it was a hack they also used and can vouch for, with one saying: "My family's done this forever, at least when it comes to stuff like making tacos, pour the grease out, rinse in water, add it back to the pan with a little bit of water and the seasoning, mix and then let it simmer and evaporate the water."

A second person, called Dr. Mike, added: "This is actually a legit tactic if you are trying for really low fat. Turns the ground beef into almost purely protein. Then season it and add cheeses or some other flavorings if you like. Or add to stews or eggs."

Others, however, weren't so keen on the idea, with another writing: "That must be the blandest, driest beef in all of the world. Like weird sawdust crumbles."

Another said: "They already sell dog food. You don't have to make it yourself."

Someone else argued that they didn't have a problem with the idea behind the hack, more so the technique.

"The only issues I have is she's pouring the grease down her sink drain," they explained.

"That's a great way to clop a drain down the line. If you don't want to cook with grease, drain it into an empty container and throw it in the garbage. It will save you on plumbing."
