Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Voted Best PS2 Game of All-Time

The Rockstar Games classic beat out strong competition from the likes of The Simpsons Hit & Run, the Fifa franchise and more in our poll.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has been voted the greatest PlayStation game of all time.

Yes, to commemorate the 20th birthday of the mighty Sony PS2, we've consulted the hive mind and done some deep research in the form of a LADbible poll on Twitter, to decide once and for all the greatest game to have ever graced the legendary console.

You picked from a selection of eight games spread across two semi finals, featuring nostalgic favourites from well-loved franchises like Grand Theft Auto, Need for Speed and FIFA; while cult Playstation licenses SSX Tricky and Rayman were also given a chance to take the top spot, as was Rockstar action-adventure Bully.

In the end there was perhaps a slightly surprising finalist as The Simpsons: Hit & Run - admittedly probably the Simpsons' best franchised game, albeit against little competition - battled through to the final. Once there, however, it came up against the formidable Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

In a result that was perhaps inevitable, given it's the the best selling PS2 game of all time and considered one of the best console games ever, it was the memories of causing carnage around the iconic map of San Andreas that most of you flocked to - GTA: San Andreas romped to victory with 58.6 percent of the vote.

On its release in 2004, it was like little gamers had ever seen before, with a gigantic, open-ended city to explore in San Andreas and a huge step up in graphic quality from its predecessors.

The violence and sleaze of previous GTA games was there still, but this time there was a tightly written narrative, that included that most rare of of gaming plus points - convincingly-acted voice overs.

Delivered with all the humour and swagger that had made fans so love the series already at that point, GTA: San Andreas quite rightly deserves to be mentioned as one of the greats, and we whole-heartedly agree with your choice.

The game courted its fair share of controversy - as do most GTA games - due to the graphic and overt violence that some viewed as celebratory and a negative influence on kids. However none of that could stop its runaway success, and you could argue it wasn't bettered in the series until Grand Theft Auto V, which didn't come out until 2013 on the PS4.

Rockstar, we bow down to you. And happy birthday to the PlayStation 2, a ruiner of a whole generation's thumbs.
