There are a few days a year that everyone looks forward to. You know - Christmas, Easter, New Year's Day, every bank holiday, the day that EA Sports release FIFA 18 World Cup mode, which makes all those other days off worthwhile because there's something to do.

Well, thankfully, today is the day that EA Sports launched their free World Cup add-on.

There's plenty of time before the real life World Cup kicks off in Russia on 14 June - giving you plenty of time to sharpen your skills and do what inevitably won't happen in the actual World Cup - lead England all the way to the final. And win.

FIFA

OK, OK - it might happen, but we're just used to being a bit disappointed every four years, so you know. Anyway, the World Cup variant of FIFA 18 has been released today, while mobile users are going to have to wait until 6 June for their content update. Still gives you over a week to try to win the thing, though.

The update features all 12 stadiums being used in the tournament, authentic kits, badges and Telstar match ball, so it's about as realistic as you can get. Except for the winning, obviously.

Players are able to choose to control any of the 32 teams who qualified for the group stage and take their team through the knockout stages and into the final in Moscow where glory awaits. They can do this both online with other FIFA-obsessed players or offline on their lonesome, late into the night with just a bowl of Doritos to keep them company.

And don't fear. If your team didn't qualify for this year's tournament, you can pretend they did - the update has a feature enabling you to create a World Cup tournament with custom teams instead of the ones that are actually in it - useful for Italian, Welsh, Scottish and American football fans.

If you want it to be even more fantastical, you can use the Ultimate Team mode to build an all-time dream team that includes iconic historical players like Ronaldo, Pele and Diego Maradona. Best of all? The update is absolutely free.
