TikTok Star With 880,000 Followers Explains How She Earns Money

TikTok Star With 880,000 Followers Explains How She Earns Money

A college student who has built up a huge following of nearly a million on TikTok says she treats her social media as a part time job, revealing how much she makes form it.

Salina, 22, started on TikTok around four months ago, uploading videos every few days when she was on holiday in Japan.

Speaking to Business Insider, Salina said: "It grew very quickly, just building and building. I was getting about 10,000 followers a day."

She says that her following is all down to TikTok's recommended video screen, where she looks for the sort of thing that is trending and then recreates it herself.

"I watch a lot of TikToks to see what's on the 'for you' page and what's trending," she explains. "That takes multiple hours throughout the day. Creating the content itself can take a few minutes, to hours, depending on how complicated the video is."

Salina has over 90,000 followers on TikTok at the time of writing, and she expects to hit one million soon. The kind of content she puts up includes makeup, dancing, lip-syncing, and comedy videos. Now, she tries to upload two to four videos every day.

But it's the live streaming that makes her the money. Users can film themselves in real time for their followers to watch, and then followers can send them virtual gifts. These are then converted to cash.

Salina continued: "You're connecting with your fans, and it's the fastest way to get money. On average, I can earn up to $20 to $50 on live streams. Sometimes I can get $100 or more within one live.

"I think it's really important to use TikTok as a tool for others things. In the long run I don't know if anyone wants to make four videos a day, every day for the rest of their lives."

Her long term goal is to build up a brand on TikTok for her new fashion business.

Making money on TikTok isn't quite the same as how influencers and other social media personalities do on YouTube or Instagram.

On YouTube, users can earn cash by placing adverts on their videos by Google. But on TikTok, as is the same with Instagram, it's generally through other types of money making forms, such as sponsorship from other brands, selling merchandise, live streaming and affiliate marketing.
