A Lad's Date Was Horrified After He Makes Her Split The Bill

A Lad's Date Was Horrified After He Makes Her Split The Bill

She said he was 'rude' after he refused to pay for her lobster and wine

It's 2019 and you'd think we might be past this issue by now, but it keeps rearing its ugly head - who foots the bill on the first date?

You might think that it's fairly straightforward - just split it. After all, you both agreed to go out, whether you've had a good time or not, and even if you don't want to see the other person again, it just makes sense, pay your way.

Well, it would seem deciding how to divvy up the cheque is much more contentious than you would imagine, as one poor soul found out when he shared screenshots of texts he had received from a woman he had recently been out on a date with.

Taking to Reddit - of course - and going by the name CuteBananaMuffin, he posted the messages and they were pretty brutal.

The guy's date was not happy that they had to split the bill.

He had just asked if she would like to go out again but safe to say date number two was not forthcoming when she called him 'rude' for not paying for dinner.

According to the messages, her order included lobster and a £72 bottle of wine - whereas CuteBananaMuffin kept things fairly modest, paying £14 for carbonara and a beer.

Now some might say, 'OK, I'll pay, it's the first date after all,' but it's generally agreed that when you're going out for dinner with someone, you don't take the piss and order the most expensive thing on the menu.

He didn't take the slight lying down, however, snapping: "You invited me. You are lucky you didn't pay for my food too."

His date ordered an extravagant meal while he just had pasta and a beer.

He told her he was 'a student not your sugar daddy', but this did not go down with his date, who bit back with: "I'm never going out with you ever again, if you can't pay for a girl's food then why accept the invite.

"Gentlemen always pay for girls' food."

From here things got a touch catty.

She said: "All you wanted anyway is to have sex with me. Anyway, bye loser."

While he came back with: "Well...ofc I wanted to have sex with you but then I realised I might have to pay £20 for that." Oof. Below the belt? Fighting fair? Either way, it's a strong hit.

She ended by calling him a 'fucking asshole', which I guess is fair enough considering the above.

The tale of the not-quite-lovers' tiff saw many siding with the bloke, saying they would always offer to pay their fair share for a meal.

One person wrote: "If someone invites me out then I go because I want to see that person and would never expect a free meal. That would be selfish and entitled."

A second added: "I'm a girl and I always go into the mindset that I pay for my drinks/food with anyone. Guy or girl.

"If they offer to pay I'll let them but offer to pay theirs next time we go out."

Another said: "Anyone that expects that royalty treatment is not someone you want in your life. Good move."

Fair to say they probably weren't meant to be.
