Airbnb Launches Million Dollar Fund To Help People Create Unusual And Unique Homes

Airbnb has launched a fund to help people create wacky and unique homes. The accommodation booking site has set up the Unique Airbnb Fund, which will offer 10 people the chance to build their dream home with cash from a pot of $1 million (£780,000).

The fund will give creative folks a chance to make 'unconventional and unusual liveablespaces'.

Entries will be subject to a judging panel made up of Emmy and Grammy award-winner Billy Porter; Airbnb superhost at the Big Idaho Potato Hotel, Kristie Wolfe; and architecture firm MVRDV, and will be scored against criteria based on 'creativity, feasibility, sustainability and social good'.

In a statement from Airbnb, Porter said: "The only thing better than pushing the boundaries of style, is empowering others to do the same.

"I'm thrilled to join Airbnb in this global search for the most outrageous, spectacular home ideas ever. I can't wait to see these concepts developed by design lovers from around the world firsthand."

To try and get your creative juices flowing, Airbnb has also shared some of its more unique listings, such as Kristie's massive potato, a UFO based in Redberth UK and a 'Magical Bamboo House in Bali.

There's also an elephant you can kip in on Jersey Shore, or else you can live like you're in a real-life fairy tale and stay inside a giant boot in Nelson, New Zealand.

The company also shared snaps of The Sheep Wagon at the Shash Dine Eco-Retreat in the US and the stunning Sky Dome pods which offer unbelievable views of the Patagonia mountains.

According to Airbnb, searches for unusual spaces - such as windmills and shepherds' huts - has gone up by almost 70 percent in the last year.

MVRDV partner Fokke Moerel added: "The Unique Airbnb Fund is a great initiative that makes hospitality exciting. It will empower people to create new spaces with daring, imaginative and fantastic architecture.

"Personal wunderkammers will be created for guests to appreciate and be inspired by."
