Australia's Big Potato Is Now On The Market For One Lucky Buyer

Or you and your mates can pool your money to collectively own one of Australia's 'Big Things'.

While they always say 'things are bigger in Texas', Australia is well known for a load of 'big things' dotted around the massive country.

You've got the Big Merino in Goulburn, NSW, the Big Prawn in Ballina, NSW, the Big Beer Can in Ghan, Northern Territory, the Big Mango, Bowen, QLD, the Big Orange in Berri, South Australia, and loads more.

You might drive past them and snap a picture for your scrapbook or plan to visit every single one of them; either way, you'll never own one...until now.

The Big Potato, located in Robertson, New South Wales, looks exactly what it says on the tin and is a proud part of the regional town.

But it's just been listed on the market for anyone who wants to snap up a bit of history.

It's going for a cool $920,000, which sounds expensive (which it is, it really is). But with such an iconic part of Aussie culture within reach, is there a limit you can put on this wonderful landmark?

Listing agent Steve Myers, from Myers Realty, said if the buyers want to get rid of the Big Potato and build something else, they're welcome to.

"There's no question that there will be a bit of disappointment from the local community ... but within three months, it'll be forgotten," he told All Homes.

"It's an old site. There have been various suggestions that it should be towed down to Goulburn and put behind the Big Merino.

"I wouldn't say people wake up in any part of the country to say 'we're going to go to Robertson today to visit the Big Potato'.

"However, when people do visit Robertson and walk around the town, it's there and they take photographs of it."

It was built in 1977 by farmer local potato grower Jim Mauger, who modelled it off the Sebago potato.

Incredibly, it was designed to house a potato information centre, for anyone who wanted some premium facts about the vegetable.

To be fair, this was way back before computers so something like that could have been pretty useful. Sadly though, 'rising costs proved an obstacle' to making this a reality.

But if you wanted to bring this idea to fruition then you can, but only if you have nearly a million bucks up your sleeve and then some more to renovate the 10 metre high and four metre wide landmark. Take it, it's yours.
